Goodwill is a non-profit that supports and develops charities that provide economic opportunities to disadvantaged people around the world.
In 2015, the group donated $4.2 million to local organizations.
Now, they’re looking to expand their reach by donating $1.8 million to organizations across the United States.
The organization’s first major donation will be a $1 million donation to the American Red Cross, which provides healthcare and food assistance to low-income Americans.
The second donation will go to the Salvation Army, which supports people with disabilities and provides meals, supplies, and services to people in need.
Finally, Goodwill’s third donation will give $500,000 to the United Way of Greater Houston.
It’s the largest single donation to a non profit organization in the city’s history.
“We’re very excited to see the impact that this funding will have in Houston,” Goodwill President and CEO Jim McDonough told Forbes.
“The local economy will benefit and the community will benefit as we provide more support to people.”
The organization expects to have the money donated by the end of September, and the rest will be distributed to local charities by the middle of the year.
The $1 billion is the largest donation to an independent non-profits group since Goodwill donated $6.3 million to the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 2001.
The nonprofit organization has been giving to organizations since it was founded in 1872, and they’ve been donating to charities for nearly 100 years.
Goodwill will also continue to support charities like the Salvation Force, Habitat for Humanity, and Salvation Army Houston.
