A job in a human resources firm is often seen as a key entry-level position, but that’s not always the case, according to a new survey.
The research by Australian University’s Centre for Business, Innovation and Employment (CBIE) has revealed that just over a third of the jobseekers surveyed were seeking a career in the human resources sector.
Key points:More than half of jobseekers were seeking to work in a business or a government sectorIt found that over half of those seeking a job in the HR sector were seeking one in the business or government sectorA median salary for HR professionals was $81,800 per yearThe survey also found that almost one in three jobseekers (28 per cent) had not previously applied for a job, and another 30 per cent had been in a job search that ended before they applied for it.
The results come on the back of a recent report from McKinsey which found that just under half of the jobs people were looking for were in the workplace.
“I think that’s indicative of the growing interest and demand for HR, particularly in the corporate sector,” said Associate Professor David Smith from the University of Sydney.
“And that’s why we see a lot of recruitment in the financial and hospitality sectors as well.”
The survey of about 600 jobseekers, including people seeking jobs in a range of sectors including IT, banking, health and the health care sector, found that the key job to securing a new position was to work as a HR professional.
Respondents were asked how important they thought it was to be a HR Professional, and how important their own career was to them.
More than one in five jobseekers said they wanted to work at a HR firm, while another 29 per cent said they would not.
The study found that only a third were working in a company that employed people as HR professionals.
Of those who were working as HR Professionals, the median salary was $83,800, while the median wage for HR professional was $85,900.
Of course, the main question that comes up is: “What do I need to do to get a job as a Human Resources professional?”
One of the key factors that led to the respondents decision to apply for a HR position was that they did not want to leave their current job.
“We found that it’s really important that they know that they want to apply and that they can do it,” said Professor Smith.
“So, we’ve put together some of the best HR tools around the world to help HR professionals.”
He said that a number of HR tools have been developed over the years to help employers get a grip on HR recruitment.
“They’re really good at making sure that you understand what you’re doing and how you’re recruiting people,” Professor Smith said.
“You can also find out what kind of skills are needed and what skills are being passed on.”
He added that a key factor to success in HR is to be able to work across a variety of industries and work with a range for a variety job positions.
“The most important thing for HR people to do is to not be discouraged by the fact that they don’t have a lot,” he said.
Professor Smith said that the HR workforce was growing by more than 200,000 in the past 12 months, with the numbers expected to grow by nearly another 30,000 this year.
“That’s a really good thing because it means that more people can be supported in their careers and also to be employed,” he added.
The survey was commissioned by the Centre for Applied Social Research (CASS), a government funded research project into HR and human resources.
