A man’s girlfriend got a $1 million payout for her student loan debt after filing for bankruptcy.
On Friday, the woman’s attorney filed for bankruptcy in Delaware.
The woman said her $1.2 million student loan was due to her being a single mother of three children.
“I owe a lot of money, and I’ve had to put in so much time to get where I am today,” the woman said in a statement to CNNMoney.
“The $1,200 monthly payment is the most I can afford.”
The woman, who requested anonymity because she’s been living with her partner, said she went to court to get help paying off the debt, but was denied by a judge.
She is not seeking to have the loan discharged.
The money was due after the woman graduated from high school, she said.
The student loan is for her degree, not her future.
The judge denied her request, saying it’s not in the woman, her partner or her children’s best interest to have her bankruptcy.
The couple has two young children, according to court documents.
The money was not included in the couple’s income tax refund, according a spokesman for the Department of Labor.
